Soho Juice Co. supported the planting of 0.75 hectares of wildflowers in the UK across 2022-2023
Soho Juice Co. is part of an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators in the UK. Not only are wildflowers attractive and beneficial to our well-being, but for the thousands of pollinating insects, wildflowers are critical.
Since 1940 we’ve lost ninety seven percent of our flower rich meadows and hundreds of our pollinator species are in decline. In areas, our local wildlife finds itself in isolated oases, walled in by agricultural land, urban landscapes, roads, and gardens.
Our solution is to restore B-Lines – a network of insect pathways along which we are restoring and creating wildflower rich habitat. These insect super highways created in partnership with GreenTheUK and Buglife will extend across the whole of the UK, allowing wildlife to move freely through our countryside and towns. Thanks to Soho Juice Co., we have created a network of flower-rich pathways benefitting pollinators, other wildlife and people.
Wildflower Restoration site 1 in London (0.01 hectares)
In the urban concrete world of London, Soho Juice supported the creation of a much needed greenspace at Wilder's Canopi Site (Great Dover St, London). This site was originally a few trees surrounded by concrete and is now 7,500 square metres of new wildflower meadows. Species such as Greater Knapweed, Common Vetch, Agrimony and Crosswort were seeded on the location to enhance the diversity and flora at the site, particularly under the already-present trees.
This oasis of biodiversity will provide a resting place, feeding ground, and swath of new habitat for numerous species, having a benefical impact on the surrounding area.
Site 2 in Surrey (0.75 hectares)
Soho Juice’s contribution enabled the important work to restore areas of Quarry Hangers Chalk Grassland Nature Reserve, outside Caterham – Surrey. Species-rich Chalk Grassland are the most biodiverse environments in Europe, often referred to as ‘Europe’s Tropical Rainforests’, capable of having forty different plant species in a single square metre. This subsequently makes them hugely important for invertebrates, with many rare and endangered species found only on rare Chalk Grassland sites like Quarry Hangers.
Their support over the past year has resulted in vivid blooming of specialist chalk grassland plants, including orchids, birdsfoot trefoil, marjoram, milkwort, wild thyme, salad burnet, wild basil and wild strawberry. All of these provide important food and forage for Quarry Hangers rare invertebrates including chalk hill blue butterfly, roman snail, wasp spider and green-eyed flower bees. Soho Juice has delivered a further 0.75ha of habitat at Quarry Hangers in winter, by clearing and burning bramble encroaching over the site’s priority grasslands.
